CNN —Back in 2019, Elon Musk made an astonishing claim for Tesla vehicles. But four years after Musk’s 2019 prediction, the average used Tesla Model 3 is selling for $29,000. Sticker prices for new Teslas dropped about 21% over the past year, according to Cox Automotive. Logically, people expect to pay less for a used car than they would for a new one. Why buy a used car if you could get a brand new vehicle for only a little more or maybe even less, after all?

CNN —Hertz, which has made a big push into electric vehicles in recent years, has decided it’s time to cut back. And EV price declines in the new car market have pushed down the resale value of Hertz’s used EV rental cars. Simply put, people are generally willing to pay a certain amount less for a used car than for a new one. Tesla makes up about 80% of Hertz’s EV fleet, and, altogether, EVs make up about 11% of Hertz’s total rental fleet. Again, Teslas, which make up 80% of Hertz’s EV rental fleet, are mostly the problem in both these areas, he has said.

When Daniel Skousen scrubs at the ash and soot covering his Maui home, he worries about the smell. Crews have installed air quality monitors throughout town and are spraying a soil sealant to prevent toxic ash from being washed into the ocean or blowing around. The Hawaii Department of Health's Environmental Health Services Division also told Skousen's attorney it had no records about residential testing of contaminants to release. “If it smells like burned plastic or burned electrical cables, then probably those chemicals are in the air and not healthy,” Hertz-Picciotto said. Whether a home can be made safe enough for residency comes down in part to the resident's risk tolerance, Hayes said.

☆ Hertz settles lawsuits over hundreds of alleged false arrests

CNN —Hertz will pay $168 million to settle 364 claims related to the company falsely reporting rental cars as stolen. Some of those involved in lawsuits against Hertz reported being held at gunpoint by police and spending days in jail before the false reports were worked out. In one case, a person claimed it took two years for the case against them to be resolved. The settlement will resolve 95% of pending claims against Hertz regarding these sorts of false arrest claims, the company said. Scherr had said in an April interview with CNBC that the cases involved “1/100 of one percent” of Hertz customer transactions.
